Biomed Commends President Clinton’s Signing
Needlestick Safety and Prevention Act; Implementation Will
Make Healthcare Workplace Safer
Atlanta, GA, November 8. Biomedical Disposal, Inc. (Biomed)
commends President Clinton for signing The Needlestick Safety
and Prevention Act. The Act requires the Occupational Safety
and Health Administration to change the federal bloodborne
pathogen standard to require employers to revise their work
practices and to use "safer medical devices" that
reduce or eliminate accidental needlesticks. Also, needle
destruction devices were cited as an example of "safer
medical devices" that can reduce accidental needlestick
injuries. In fact, in order to ensure passage, Charles N.
Jeffress, OSHA Administrator, wrote "OSHA has allowed, and
intends to continue to allow, employers to use sharps destruction
devices to help reduce the risk of needlestick injuries."
"The Congress has acted on this important public health
issue – protecting the nation’s healthcare workers from
the deadly scourge of HIV and hepatitis," said [redacted], CEO of Biomed. "Also, Congress recognized
that safety requires a comprehensive approach – eliminating
the behaviors that cause accidents as well as using devices
that have proven to reduce accidental needlesticks."
Biomed offers a comprehensive array of products and services
that make the healthcare workplace safer. NICSx
is a proprietary, Internet based management system that
can put a facility into immediate compliance with the new
bloodborne pathogen standard, and is based on methods proven
in independent studies to nearly eliminate accidents in
various industrial settings. SharpXÒ
is an FDA approved Class III needle destruction device
that proved its ability to reduce accidental needlesticks
through clinical trials. Additional safety products are
scheduled for introduction in the next few months.
Biomed’s products are complimentary and competitive to
those offered by Becton Dickinson and Company (NYSE:BD),
Med-Design Corporation (NASDAQ:MEDC), Bio-Plexus Inc. (NASDAQ:BPLX)
and Medisys Technologies, Inc. (OTCBB:SCEP).
